Exciting developments are unfolding in Nigeria’s Gateway State as Ogun moves to fully live up to its name—serving as a gateway not only to other parts of the country but also to the world.
For years, travelers from Ogun and neighbouring states had to journey to Lagos to board domestic and international flights. That reality is now changing.
Under the leadership of Dapo Abiodun, the state has built a modern aviation facility—Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo—designed to high engineering standards. The airport is gradually moving toward full operations as the government intensifies preparations to begin international passenger services.
The first international operation planned for the airport is the airlift of Muslim pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj. The move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen aviation infrastructure, boost economic growth, and position Ogun as a major logistics and transportation hub in Nigeria’s South-West.
To facilitate the launch of international operations, the state government has begun consultations with key federal agencies including the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. Aviation consultant Capt. Dapo Olumide has been tasked with coordinating discussions to ensure all regulatory and security requirements are met in line with standards set by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
Security agencies have also pledged full collaboration with the Ogun State Government following a strategic meeting at the airport in Ikenne Local Government Area. Officialsconfirmed that the facility already has the infrastructure and management capacity required for Hajj flights.
The airport has been certified for domestic commercial operations and approved by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria for pilgrimage flights. About 500 pilgrims are expected to depart from the facility this year.
Once international services commence, Gateway International Airport is expected to improve regional connectivity, support cargo movement and international trade, and complement operations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
With these developments, the airport is set to transform Ogun’s aviation landscape andbring the world closer to the Gateway State. ✈️🌍
